Level-Up LEadership Coaching

We are passionate about using evidence to improve teaching practice, school leadership and student learning.

We know you can use many forms of evidence to guide improvement. For example, more traditional forms include assessment data such as standardised and school-based assessment results. Formative assessments and staff, parent, and student voice are also often used.

We have noticed, however, that one form of data is often absent. Inner data or that which exists ‘within’ our teachers and school leaders is an essential missing ingredient. Including their psyche, strengths & weaknesses, goals & aspirations, motivation & determination, and biases, reflection upon and action regarding inner data is critical to ensuring individual and collective success.

Without our teachers and school leaders operating to the best of their ability, our schools and students will never reach their fullest potential. As such, nurturing and developing these critical elements represents an opportunity not to be missed.

We understand that coaching is important to support teachers and school leaders in drawing upon their inner data to perform their best.

But what, exactly, is coaching?

Coaching, as a concept, means many things to many people. As such, you need to understand what it means to us at EDT. Perhaps the best way to appreciate what coaching is is to understand what it is not.

What coaching is not.

To put it bluntly, from our point of coaching is not leadership, management, mentoring, training, counselling, or consulting. The skills of coaching may exist with and enhance each of these roles, but coaching is much more. Further, while each of these roles plays a critical role in developing and supporting individuals and teams within our organisations, each implies a master-servant power dynamic that can stifle growth.

What coaching is.

Coaching is not about teaching, telling or advice-giving. Instead, it is about supporting individuals or teams to make changes, to grow. It occurs through an evolving relationship between the coach and counterpart(s) through rich purposeful dialogue. The nature of change may be about improving relationships, acquiring new skills, increasing motivation, or clarifying goals. They cannot be set by a coach or third party in advance; instead, the agenda needs to be authentically driven by the counterpart(s). The role of coaching is then to: (1) ask questions to uncover a client’s agenda, (2) support a client to turn the agenda into goals, (3) link a client’s agenda with their core values & beliefs, and, (4) help their client identify and move past blockers and move to action, and, (5)reflect on learnings associate with the process.
